Transparency from the heart of a pastor

Avoid Debt!

What’s the best advice you’d give to someone younger than you?

If there is anything that has enslaved people more than anything else, it is debt. I was blessed to have no debt until college. Student loan debt has been a noose around my neck for a long, long time. I understand we sometimes have to have a mortgage on a home or a car payment, but credit cards and other loans have been the death of many marriages.

I would advise people to avoid debt. Save more than you spend. Set out to have a career that will pay well and hopefully leave you feeling fulfilled, enjoying what you do and making a difference while earning a livable wage.

When marrying, it is important that you know what kind of spender you marry before the wedding. A wedding itself will be a pretty good indicator of a bride’s spending habits and desires. A lady can watch a man to see his spending priorities. Will he spend frivolously on guns, boats, or things he loves before paying his bills? Does he seek to save any money and plan for the future?

My advice today does not come from a place of getting it right but rather from a place of hindsight, wishing I had done many things differently. Bad spending habits will put a huge damper on your life if you are not careful. Avoid debt like the plague! These are today’s honest words from a pastor!
