Developing Your Own Values

How have your political views changed over time?

As I grew up, I dealt with conflicting political views within the family. One side would boast of the stances of their party, while the other side would brag of the accomplishments of theirs. This varied, depending on if their favorite party or politician was in office. As a child, I would retreat to my aunt’s TV room and watch her bootlegged copy of “It’s a Wonderful Life” while the family would engage in their political arguments.

After years of having both sides pushed upon me, I had to make my own decisions. Within Christianity, there is a scary loyalty that exists for parties and politicians. This can happen on both sides, but I do see it more among conservatives. We have to avoid a cult-like allegiance to a politician or political party. For me, the values must align with the Bible. If the politician or party doesn’t, I will not use the ends to justify the means.

To answer the question, here is how my political views have changed:

  1. I first held the political views of my family.
  2. I jumped the family ship to look an expected part.
  3. I ditched the expected part to think independently and biblically.

You and I have to think for ourselves. There was a day when critical, independent thinking was championed. Now it is demonized. If you don’t think like the masses, you are scrutinized. So what?!? You and I were not made to blend in but to stand out, especially if you are a follower of Christ.

Ask yourself why you believe what you believe. You better know it because it WILL be challenged. Stand firm. Be a person of conviction. We need you.

  1. My political views has changed drastically as I grew up in a democratic household so I started following that same path as I have gotten more involved in the political arena and my Christian values matters I am now Independent. Because the society does not recognize the Independent party it makes life unbalanced. I look to the Christian core values in speeches lifestyles & how they have voted over the years along with there current political stance.

    1. Your story is very similar to mine. My mother would never vote. I never understood why until I later discovered she didn’t want to hear my dad complain about her vote being different from his. My dad swung to the Democratic Party after some disappointment he experienced, but my mom’s views were more independent.

  2. It’s amazing that society does not create change for the better. This society just go with the flow. No one wants to take a stance. Most of society has been raised with some form of Christian knowledge. Our laws are founded on biblical principles I believe we would see the “real” Christian politician if we as citizens would demand change. Enough of the Good Old boys club. The political system needs a serious overhaul.

    1. Amen and Amen!
