Do you believe in fate/destiny?
“I believe in destiny” is a line from Kenny Loggins’ hit song “Meet Me Half Way”. It works for Kenny Loggins, but I see things that a little different view. Many say they believe in destiny, yet they leave God out of the equation. Destiny is defined in Merriam-Webster as follows:
something to which a person or thing is destined : FORTUNEwants to control his own destiny
: a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power or agency
Somewhere between the emphasis on the free will of man in the first definition and the sovereignty of an undefined something in the second definition is a balance. In Christianity, some choose to focus totally on either the free will of man in being able to control everything, or they focus totally on the sovereignty of God to the extreme that everything that happens, sinful or not, is a part of God’s perfect plan.
I believe in destiny in the sense that God is at work, and Scripture does used the term “predestined”. While I believe this is a biblical word, I am not a Calvinist. God has a path He has designed for us, yet He gives us the ability to choose. The late Evangelist Junior Hill used this illustration to balance the sovereignty of God and the free will of man. He likened it to a GPS. God gives us the ability to make wrong turns in life, yet He is looking down from Heaven and is more than willing to recalculate the route to get us to where we need to be.
We are not too powerful to override God’s purposes. He will do what He wills, but we experience the consequences of disobedience. To answer the question in the prompt, I believe in destiny if that means God is at the helm. After making my own bad turns in life, I just want what He wants.
