Tiramisu

Tiramisu…I remember the first time I heard this word. I thought it might be some oriental pain relief technique or meditation practice. My family didn’t eat out a lot, so I found my girlfriend at the time having to school me on what this is. Not wanting to look like a dud on the date, I decided I would try it. I was not disappointed.

For those who don’t know what it is, Wikipedia describes it as “an Italiandessert made of ladyfinger pastries (savoiardi) dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar and mascarpone and flavoured with cocoa.” Because I was not a coffee connoisseur at the time, I thought it may be repulsive. For years, I ate it at the same Italian restaurant. But I’ll never forget the day when tiramisu went from tasty to life-transforming.

We were on a trip to Pigeon Forge, TN. It was lunch time, so we ventured out and stumbled across Johnny Carino’s, an Italian restaurant that was not represented anywhere near our small South Carolina town. The lunch cuisine was already superior to our norm. Per usual, we ordered tiramisu. I’ll never forget that first bite. It was so good that I didn’t want to swallow it.
