IN Everything Give Thanks

The last almost 24 hours have been action-packed. Last night, my mom called with a medical concern and ended up in the ER. We got her back home at 11:00 pm, and I was in the bed at 11:50. I was awakened by a 1 year old at 3:45 am, and I could not sleep after that. I got out of bed at 5:50 am to meet someone for breakfast at 6:30. As I was driving, I got in the way of a buck who was trying to cross the street, and the picture above shows you some of the damage he did. There was a mixup with the person I was to meet for breakfast, so I ate alone (which was probably best since I was a little shaken). I will leave work to spend time at the church getting ready for Sunday, so I will probably crash tonight (no relationship to the accident with Bambi’s husband this morning).

As I reflected about these events, I began to give thanks IN the circumstances. Notice I said IN not FOR. There is no way I will thank God for the $500 of my tax return I will have to pay for car repairs. But I will thank God that the damage done was not worse. I will thank God that I was not injured. I will praise God that my mom’s scare was nothing major.

Although I am tired and ready for the day to be over, I see God’s hand in this. Things happen. How we respond to those things will make or break us. Choose to give thanks IN your circumstances.

  1. We can also give thanks because of the work in us God is doing through the circumstances. Our lives are in the perfect control of God’s hands. And He specifically targets the flesh and self-love within us by forming circumstances around us that will bring into light, and unto death, the self-love that we have harbored. This is also known as the cross. Paul said, “I die daily,” and Jesus, “take up your cross daily and follow Me,” and I believe this is what is meant by that: accepting the circumstances and allowing God to do His work in us. Allowing God to make us weak, that we may draw on His strength. As John the Baptist said, “He must increase, and I must decrease.” We often have a hard time giving thanks in and for hard circumstances, but it is because we lack the vision to see what God sees: a work being completed. “For He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.” When we can come to fully trust that God is working ALL things out for good, and ALL things to the council of His will, we can truly begin to rejoice in ALL circumstances, for we know that He is molding us into His image. And who are we, as clay, to tell the Potter how to mold us? We must simply trust and obey, daily choosing to bear the cross that God would choose for us.

  2. Reblogged this on Matthew Winters (Honest Thoughts from a Pastor) and commented:
You don’t have to be thankful FOR everything, but you can be thankful IN everything. Read how a deer and a driver’s side door that won’t open reminded me of this biblical lesson.

  3. Indeed we can feel HIM IN the midst of miserable circumstances if we choose. I’m so glad everyone is ok (albeit Bambi’s Dad). HE provides~even when we can’t. Keep up the faithful work and being his hands and feet!

  5. Amen! When we praise God through our circumstances He gets the glory and we come up with the conclusion that God is faithful! Thanks for sharing Matthew. This is Carly from Twitter and Message In Stanza and this is my new blog, My Ink Smears. 🙂 I hope you will follow me here.
